What is an Awning?

Folding fabric awnings of various designs are called awnings – some are designed to shade rooms and are mounted outside on window openings, others can serve as a temporary roof over a terrace or balcony. In warehouses of trading companies and in construction supermarkets there is an extremely narrow range of standard models, mainly awnings are produced by order – the required system, the required dimensions and from the fabric that the customer likes. So, let’s start by choosing the system.

Awnings: installation and maintenance features

For better protection from the sun, a retractable awning have been designed to change the angle of the tilt of the tent using adjustment screws. However, rainwater runoff is only ensured when the slope exceeds 15°.

Awning design

The basis of any awning is a metal frame with a transformation mechanism. Its type determines the maximum dimensions, possible shape and inclination of the fabric, as well as the resistance of the structure to wind loads and ease of use.

Awnings: installation and maintenance features

The fabric roller (a) is usually made of galvanized and painted steel, and the levers and edge profile (b) is made of polymer-coated aluminium. These parts are maintenance-free, unlike the fabric to be washed and the concealed mechanism to be lubricated 3.

Dome (otherwise – basket) awnings are fixed above window and door openings and are intended mainly for decoration of facades and easy shading of rooms. The coverings are stretched with a frame of several curved arches. Such a construction is not quite suitable for the northern climate as there is no protection for the fabric and the material suffers from frost, ice and wind in winter. However, if you place the dome awning under the cornice or visor, its service life will be at least 6 years. Another option is to discuss with the manufacturer the possibility of simple dismantling for winter. The cost of the awning with the area of 2 m2 starts from 25 thousand rubles.

Awnings: installation and maintenance features

Vertical awnings remind everyone of the familiar roll-up curtains, but they are mounted on the street side of the window and thus provide twice as effective protection of rooms from sun heating. The simplest construction consists of a roller with fabric hidden in a protective and decorative box, two side rails and a horizontal sliding rail to which the lower edge of the fabric is attached. Windproof systems are also equipped with a spring tensioning mechanism for web tensioning. These models are also ideal for shading a pergola, veranda or balcony.
Awnings: operation and maintenance

All awnings are afraid of strong winds, and inclined awnings are also afraid of heavy rain and hail. In bad weather and for the time of departure they must be folded. Automatic systems have a power outage for the winter. If the fabric gets wet during rain, it should be dried. If you roll it up wet, a fungus will develop between the layers in the folds, which is difficult to remove. Make sure that no branches or bumps have fallen on the canopy, which could cause the mechanism to jam and tear the fabric. Wash the dirty material with a sponge or soft brush with a neutral surfactant solution. Do not use organic solvents or high-pressure washers. If the force is increased by turning the collar or if any extraneous noise is heard while the drive is running, stop the shaft immediately and find out the cause of the fault.

Facade tilting awnings, like vertical awnings, are mainly designed to protect rooms from the sun. They are deployed by means of hinged levers hinged to the wall approximately in the middle of the window aperture height. The advantage of the systems is that the cloth does not interfere with the ventilation of the room. The cost of vertical and inclined window awnings – from 4500 rubles. per 1 m2 .

There is also a hybrid design, in which the upper part of the cloth is vertical, and the lower part is deflected by levers. It is more resistant to the wind than sloping. However, it costs 30-40 % more.

Elbow awnings are installed above terraces. They can be folded out with swivel levers. These “arms” are straightened by powerful springs and carry forward the metal profile to which the front edge of the fabric, which is wound on the shaft, is attached.

The maximum dimensions of this type of awning are 3.5 × 7 m (outreach × width), its inclination can be adjusted within 90°, the design is able to withstand wind blowing at a speed of 12 m/s (but not more).

The worn awning cover can be replaced by contacting a specialist company. The cost of the service is 50-70% of the price of the new design.
