It is unbelievable how many people continue to be touched by their dog sitting in the front passenger seat absolutely unfastened, or even tries to climb onto the driver’s lap, or how the dog puts his head out the open window, sticking the tongue out. All this is cool only in pictures from the Internet, but in reality, such things can turn into trouble.
Part of the disregard for the transportation of dogs has been formed by the law – in terms of transportation, traffic rules in some countries considers pets a baggage. The requirement, therefore, remains only one: the load should not limit visibility on the driver’s side and interfere with control. At the same time, it is quite obvious that one thing is a suitcase with things, and another thing is a living being, sometimes comparable in weight and size to a person.
Train your dogs starting when they are puppies
One of the biggest problems with dogs in cars is their behavior. Only one thing can completely guarantee the dog’s peace of mind – his own deep-rooted habit of being in a car. Therefore, having a puppy, take him on any trip that you can. But remember – the first trip should not be fraught with something unpleasant, such as a visit to the veterinarian, etc. Or, if that happened, don’t take the pet to the clinic right away – take a walk, give a treat, scratch them behind their ear in order to break the “car-means-trouble” association.
AND EVEN IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CAR, BUT ALREADY HAVE A PUPPY, TAKE HIM ON RIDES IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT.
If you can’t teach your dog to behave in a car from a young age, you can catch up on it later. Bring the dog to the car, let it look around, start the engine. Put your hand on the roof of the car – the dog will perceive it as the fact that the owner is in charge, everything is under control. Getting inside the car should take place only on command – you can use “place”, “go”, “jump” as keywords.
If the dog doesn’t want to get into the car at all, you can put a piece of treat inside or have a friend whom the dog trusts sit in there.
Do not rush to slam the door; the dog needs to look around and get used to the new territory. Getting out of the car should also be only at the command “come” or “let’s go”.
Take some time for this, because a four-legged car enthusiast – both trained as a puppy and a “convert” – must learn these simple rules, and it takes some time. Otherwise, one day he will joyfully jump into the neighboring Gelandewagen, mark the steering wheel there and wait for praise from you.
Fasten your dog’s seatbelt
In no case should the dog move freely around the cabin. If you have a small dog, then the way out of the situation suggests itself – get a box-carrying and transport the animal only in it. Choose a box of the maximum size that can be placed in your car – this is necessary for the box to be fixed – or fasten the carrier with special straps. If the dog is big, then here are the options for how it can be fastened in the cabin. There are plenty of dog accessories for cars to make it easier.
The easiest way is a leather or cloth leash wrapped around the pins of the head restraints of the rear seat, leaving a free section of 30-50 cm, with a snapped carabiner over the collar. The second option is more reliable: purchase a harness and fasten it to a standard seat belt. Harnesses can be ordinary and automobile – in the second case, there may be a latch inserted into the standard seat belt lock. In addition, there are special dog seat belts now on sale, made according to the harness, but much more restricting to the movement of the dog.
If you have a hatchback or station wagon, and the animal travels in the trunk, you can optionally install a partition (such partitions are suitable for any car) that separates the “dog compartment” from the rest of the passenger compartment. If the trunk allows you to place a large metal cage, then it makes sense to go for this option.
YES, THIS SAD MUZZLE IN THE MIRROR LOOKS LIKE A PRISONER, BUT IT IS SAD ONLY BECAUSE IT CAN’T LICK THE EARS FROM THE REAR SEATS PASSENGERS. DON’T WORRY, YOUR PET WILL BE FINE.
Do not let your dog to lean out of the window
A small but extremely important “preview” to this point: in no case do not leave the animal f in the car for a long time. In winter, this is fraught with hypothermia, in summer – heat stroke, and in both cases it can lead to fatal consequences. Tint the rear window, and preferably the entire “rear hemisphere” – this will have a very positive effect on the microclimate of the rear of the cabin in the warm season. And now to the point.
If your car is equipped with air conditioning, do not try to abandon it in the heat because of your fear of getting a cold or anything – a dog handles high temperature in the cabin much harder than you. And the dogs’ desire to cool themselves down by leaning out of the window carefully opened by the owner can turn into a disease for your pet – as a result of such a “natural airflow” you will not protect yourself from the common cold, but your dog will definitely have it. And this is not the worst – leaning out the window threatens the dog with a chance to get otitis or conjunctivitis, as well as the likelihood of being hit with a stone or simply falling out of the car with a sharp maneuver – this happens even with the dogs who are strapped in.
If the windows in the car are still open while driving, then make sure that the draft is not strong around the cabin (do not open all the windows to the fullest extent), place the dog away from the window. Ideally – get a special grid-curtain for car windows – it extends to any height of lowering the glass, and takes up a minimum of space when folded.
DO AT LEAST A PART OF WHAT IS LISTED ABOVE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE HOW YOUR PET BITES OFF THE EAR OF A BIKER NEXT TO YOU AT THE CROSSROAD.
